The Sailor Bob Song

Right here, right now, something is shining
Right now, right here, it's all very clear
You can see the sights, you can hear the sounds
You can feel the world all around
Right where you are, something is knowing
From there all things are freely flowing
You just watch the thoughts and feelings floating by
They are only clouds, but you're the empty sky
What's wrong with right now unless you think about it
I got it from an old sailor, bobbing along

What we're seeking is not very far
Presence, Awareness, is what you already are
That is ever fresh, untouched in any way
Know yourself as This and every problem slips away
So what's wrong with right now unless you think about it
I got it from an old sailor, bobbing along
What's wrong with right now unless you think about it ...

Song of the Sixth Patriarch

I grew up a peasant boy, but my mind was bright and clear
One day in the market place, I happened to hear
A man recite a sutra. it was the Buddha's word
It set my heart on fire, the moment that I heard

He told me his master, was living in the North
Teaching in a monastery with one thousand monks
I made up my mind I would journey to his feet
And ask him to lead me to the one Reality

For thirty days I walked, hardly taking food or rest
All that kept me going was my passion for the quest
When I arrived and he asked me why I came
'To become a living Buddha,' was the answer that I gave

He knew my heart was true, so he called me late one night
And read the Diamond Sutra to me in the candlelight
When I heard about a Mind* that alights upon no pain
Suddenly I came to a great awakening

Who would have known that my Mind is intrinsically pure
Who would have known that my Mind is forever free from change
Who would have known it gives rise to this manifested world
Who would have known I would find ... Buddha is the Light in my own Mind

Well ever since that night I've had just one thing to teach
The wisdom of all sages is in everybody's reach
The life of illusion ends as soon as you begin
To let go of everything and turn your light within

Who would have known that my Mind is intrinsically pure
Who would have known that my Mind is forever free from change
Who would have known it gives rise to this manifested world
Who would have known I would find ... Buddha is the Light in my own Mind

Who would have known that my Mind is intrinsically pure
Who would have known that my Mind is forever free from change
Who would have known it gives rise to this manifested world
Who would have known I would find ... Buddha is the Light in my own Mind
Buddha is the Light in my own Mind ...
Buddha is the Light in my own Mind ...

* "Mind" (with a capital 'M') in this song refers to the Buddhist concept of the no-self (no little 'me') or the Emptiness beyond all thoughts, feelings and sensory perceptions -- It is the tranquil Awarenss that we are -- aware of Itself and 'this manifested world'.

It Is Well With My Soul

by Horatio Spafford

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Refrain

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live:
If Jordan above me shall roll,
No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life
Thou wilt whisper Thy peace in my soul.

Open My Eyes, That I May See

The original hymn: Open My Eyes, That I May See was written by Clara Scott from a dualistic perspective over a century ago in America. The alternative words below, reflecting non-dual spirituality, came to Pete Sumner after experiencing the direct seeing awareness exercises devised by Douglas Harding. In this version, the song is directed to the Teacher within -- our essential Self -- the Spirit divine.

Open my eyes, that I may see
All of the truth you have for me;
Place in my hands the wonderful key
That shall release and set me free.

(Refrain)
Silently now, the One I see,
Seeking no more, I’ll simply be;
Pure Light of Life, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

Open my ears, that I may hear
Pointers to truth when whisper’d near;
And when the One is heard everywhere
The false sense of self has disappeared.

Open my mouth and let me sing
Naught I may be -- yet everything.
Thoughts come and go, to none will I cling
Awareness I am through thick and thin.

On this theme, Adyashanti comments:

When you open your eyes, that’s the world seeing itself. When you listen, that’s the world hearing itself. When you touch, that’s the world touching itself. When you taste, that’s the world tasting itself. The world is conscious through you.

Incidentally, Adya concludes some of his retreats by inviting participants to join him in singing, as a three-part round, what he says he has come to realize is a deeply spiritual song. You can listen to the song sung by Ethan Walker III >Here. The words go ...

ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BOAT
(live with intention, love and gratitude)

GENTLY DOWN THE STREAM
(resististing nothing through all your years)

MERRILY, MERRILY, VERILY, VERILY
(with much joy while being mindful of truth/reality)

LIFE
(Everything that is done, thought and believed -- everything that happens everywhere)

IS BUT A DREAM
(is but Consciousness manifesting temporarily as so many forms)

You may like Claudia Anderson’s alternate version better …

Propel, Propel, Propel your craft
Placidly down the liquid solution
Ecstatically, ecstatically, ecstatically, ecstatically,
Existence is but an illusion.
